  1. I bought a "smart" plug from Amazon that doesn’t need an app. I just plugged it in and the remote button communicates with it no sweat. Why involve your phone when it’s not necessary?

  2. Praise you for bleeping out "Alexa." You are a true saint with that!!! I went through a period where I changed the Alexa wake word to avoid Youtubers setting it off.

  3. I use a decent smart plug as a failsafe power down for my 3d printer. If the smart fire alarm detects smoke it’ll shut her down. Of If there a run away error or other issue reported to my management system power it down. And most importantly if I see something weird going on from my web cam monitor I can power it down.

It’s a failsafe so it’s not getting used often but it’s peace of mind to know I can kill power on my printer if needed very quickly and reliably.

  4. Always be cautious that whatever you’re buying may not work on the next software update on your phone or device. I have a particular set of lights that can only be controlled from a very old phone that is essentially now a dedicated home remote because it’s no longer updated on platforms.

  5. Put the round smart plug on the top outlet, then the regular grounded plug will fit in the bottom outlet. Still silly that they made them round so you can’t use two!

  6. If you have a proper mesh system in your house. Like the google wifi pro you don’t need to switch between 2.4ghz and 5ghz to setup the Govee stuff.

  7. Number of outlets per location! I recommend only 2. For at typical circuit (you may have 4 to 8 locations). Keep the number of controlled outlets as LOW as practical, but no more than 2 at each location. Two singles (stacked as shown) or One "double". For instance, I control my Christmas tree and it’s topper (a star) on separate switches from the same outlet. Set to turn off at different times.

  8. Screws not aligned properly are a 10 irritation. I checked every outlet and switch when I moved in as well as the cross tip screws on the door hinges.

  9. The amp ratings can differ dramatically for resistive loads and motors!

Resistive loads are the easiest on smart plugs. A heating element is a good example.

Motors are up to 10x harder on smart switches. Be careful with switching even relatively low powered motors as they can easily draw over 16 amps for a short time during startup. Not long enough to trip the breaker but your smart plug might not be suitable to handle it.

So please be careful with switching your shop vac with a smart plug.

  10. man I love using these for holiday lights so I don’t have to crawl under things to plug and unplug them daily. What a game changer. Do you have one on smart bulbs yet? I’d bee curious about the lighting situation

  11. When I saw the screw at 70 degrees I knew exactly what was wrong
first thing I did when we bought our new house was turn every single screw to straight north!

  12. Ah, yes – you have the screw on your outlet cover polarized in the vertical position. Every outlet in our house has the outlet cover screws in the vertical position. 👍

  13. My wife uses one for her hair curler. Not to turn on as much as to be sure she turned if off when we get 10 minutes from the house and she cannot remember if she unplugged it. 🙂

  14. The problem wasn’t the screw orientation. It’s that the plug is upside down. ie paperclip shorting if something falls against the wall and shorts the flat prongs. By having the ground on the top, you will trip the GFCI.

  15. Smart Things and Goole Home work well for me. EXCEPT for the GE and Phillips brand lights (not compatible with 3rd party Apps).

  16. The BN Link plug no longer supports energy monitoring. I ordered two using the updated link in video description. Energy monitoring did not show up in the app after installing the plugs. I sent an email to BN Link tech support and they confirmed that those plugs no longer have energy monitoring.

  17. for in home usage 10 A should be fine what are you going to plug in that neede remote switching. some lamps?

    then again we are working with 230 volt here so 230 V x 10 A = 2300 watts.
    your 120 x 10 A is only 1200 Watts
So yeah i would understand your advice for 15 A plugs which would make it 1800 Watts

  18. I am wondering about power usage for these plugs. I have noticed a big increase in my electric bill since I installed them. I have 8 of them.

  19. The plugged in switch with the keychain remote. The plug on the outlet is for when you lose the remote!!😂

  20. LOL the screw needs to be horizontal – it is less noticeable if it is slightly off like the one in your video – I hope you went back and fixed it. hahaha!
